Q1Panel Member 1: "Explain how electrical equipment is classified for offshore oil rigs where explosive hydrocarbon gases may be present."
Candidate Answer: "Sir, hazardous areas are classified according to IEC / IS standards into Zone 0 (explosive gas atmosphere present continuously or for long periods), Zone 1 (explosive atmosphere likely during normal operation), and Zone 2 (explosive atmosphere unlikely during normal operation and only for short duration). In Zone 1 and Zone 2, we use Flameproof / Explosion-Proof enclosures (Ex d) that contain an internal explosion, or Intrinsically Safe circuits (Ex i) that limit electrical energy below the ignition threshold of methane/gas mixtures."
